  Hydrosol (also known as Floral Water) is a precious water-based substance obtained from aromatic plants during the distillation process, alongside essential oils. When plant material undergoes steam distillation, the essential oil molecules are separated, while the distilled water retains the plant’s water‑soluble compounds and a small amount of essential oil molecules. This is what we call hydrosol.

  Characteristics of Hydrosol

  • Composition: Contains water‑soluble plant compounds and a small amount of essential oil molecules.

  • Nature: Gentler than essential oils, suitable for direct use on the skin or in daily life.

  • Types: Organic plant hydrosols, wild plant hydrosols, etc. Common examples include lavender hydrosol, chamomile hydrosol, rose hydrosol, and neroli hydrosol.

  • Uses: Can be used as natural toner, soothing spray, a base in aromatherapy, and even in food or beverages.

  Differences from Essential Oils

  • Concentration: Essential oils are highly concentrated and fat‑soluble, while hydrosols are water‑soluble with much lower concentration.

  • Safety: Hydrosols are milder, making them suitable for babies, pregnant women, or sensitive skin.

  • Fragrance: Hydrosols have a lighter, fresher scent compared to essential oils.
