Zingiberaceae Essential Oil
Zingiberaceae plants are typically perennial herbs with aromatic properties. They may have creeping or rhizomatous (bulb-like) underground stems.
Morphological Features:
Leaves are arranged in two rows, and their blades are large, lanceolate, or elliptical. Each leaf has a distinct leaf sheath.
The inflorescences often form head-like, panicle, or cone-shaped clusters. The flowers lack petals but have six specialized perianth segments. The outer segments resemble sepals, often fused into a tube with one side splitting and having toothed tips. The inner segments resemble petals. There is usually one fertile stamen (the functional male reproductive organ), along with two sterile stamens fused into a lip-like structure.
The fruit is a capsule (loculicidal capsule), and the seeds often have a false covering (pseudaril).
Distribution Range:
The Zingiberaceae family comprises approximately 49 genera with around 1500 species. These plants are primarily distributed in tropical regions.
